Using WhatsMyIP
Understand the limits of IP geolocation, network checks and speed measurements, responsible tool use, accounts and affiliate links.
Tools for understanding a connection
WhatsMyIP provides IP information and tools for diagnosis, comparison and learning. Use network checks only on destinations you own or are authorised to test. Do not use the service to disrupt systems, attempt unauthorised access or work around rate limits.
What a result can and cannot tell you
- An IP address identifies a network connection as seen by a service. It does not by itself identify a person.
- IP geolocation is approximate. A city or map coordinate is not proof of a device's location, and provider data can be incomplete or out of date.
- Network checks originate from our server, not your device. A timeout is not proof that the destination is down for everybody.
- A TLS certificate check is not an audit of a website's content or overall security.
- The speed test measures HTTP transfers along the path to our server. It is not certification of your broadband plan or a guarantee of performance elsewhere.
Your files and results
Keep a copy of your original input. Formatting, minification and image conversion can change a file's representation; resizing and lossy image formats can discard detail. Review exported results before relying on them. Supported formats, limits and processing methods are described beside each tool.
Accounts and API access
Keep account credentials and API keys private. Request limits and API error handling are described in the API documentation. These usage notes do not create a new subscription, change an existing credit balance or promise a service-level agreement. For help with an existing purchase or account, contact us.
VPN referrals and editorial content
Some links in our VPN guide are affiliate links and may earn a commission. Prices, features and refund conditions are set by the provider; confirm the plan and current terms before buying. A VPN does not make you anonymous or eliminate every form of tracking. Sponsored articles are identified separately from independent guidance.
