Privacy & data handling
Learn which WhatsMyIP tools run locally, what network checks send to servers, and how accounts, cookies and external links work.
What stays on your device
JSON formatting, JavaScript formatting, text comparison, image conversion and user-agent decoding are performed in your browser. These tools do not upload the text, code or images you select to the WhatsMyIP server. Downloaded results are created by your browser. Closing or reloading the page can discard unsaved input.
This does not mean visiting the website is anonymous: the server and delivery services receive connection information such as your IP address and browser request headers when they deliver pages and files.
What network tools send
- IP information: your connection IP, or an IP you enter, is processed by our server using installed MaxMind GeoLite2 and IPtoASN databases. The result includes source and build-date information. The lookup itself does not require sending the address to those database providers.
- DNS and domain checks: the requested hostname is sent to our server. DNS resolution uses Cloudflare's DNS service; domain registration lookups contact the appropriate RDAP registry service. The result identifies the RDAP source.
- Port, TLS and traceroute checks: our server contacts the public destination you specify. That destination may record the connection from our server.
- Speed test: your browser transfers test data to and from our server through Cloudflare. It does not upload one of your personal files. The test shows its data allowance before you start.
Accounts and browser storage
Account features use your sign-in details, account identifiers, API key records and credit balance. Google sign-in, where available, loads Google's sign-in service and sends the sign-in credential to our server for verification. API keys are credentials: keep them out of public code, URLs and support messages.
Session and request-security cookies support sign-in and protect forms. Your light/dark theme preference is stored in your browser's local storage as wmi-theme. You can remove site cookies and local storage in your browser settings; doing so can sign you out and reset preferences.
Service logs and external services
Web delivery, security and operational logs can contain request information, including IP addresses and requested URLs. Avoid putting private material into a URL. Cloudflare processes traffic as part of delivering and protecting the website. See Cloudflare's privacy policy and, if you use Google sign-in, Google's privacy policy for their own processing.
The delivery layer also adds a Cloudflare performance beacon. It measures page performance and visits separately from the tool results.
Advertising and affiliate links
This website loads advertising through Holid. Advertising and consent controls can involve other providers and browser storage. Your available consent choices are shown by the advertising consent interface. See Holid for provider information.
Links to VPN providers may pass through affiliate tracking services. Following a link leaves WhatsMyIP and the destination's privacy and cookie practices apply. A referral identifier identifies our referral relationship; a working link alone does not prove a purchase or commission was recorded.
Questions about your information
Email [email protected] for questions about your account information, access, correction, deletion or how long a particular record is kept. Please identify WhatsMyIP and the relevant account without sending your password or API key. We may need to verify ownership.
