About WhatsMyIP & data sources

Who runs WhatsMyIP, where our IP location data comes from, and the licences and limits that apply.

Who runs WhatsMyIP?

WhatsMyIP is built and operated by WebFinance Digital i Sverige AB, a Swedish company. Our tools help you check your public IP address, understand its approximate location and troubleshoot network connections. For questions about the service, contact our team.

IP location data: MaxMind GeoLite2

This product includes GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind, available from MaxMind.

Our IP location results use the locally installed GeoLite2 City database. The IP Geolocation tool includes the database build date in its results. We display selected location fields from the database; those locations are estimates, not GPS readings or a way to identify a particular household, person or street address.

GeoLite data is provided under the MaxMind GeoLite End User License Agreement, which incorporates the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. The data is supplied without warranties of accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose; see the licence terms for the full warranty disclaimer. These data licences do not apply to the whole WhatsMyIP website.

Compare a location

If a result looks wrong, first check the IP address and whether a VPN is active. Compare it with MaxMind's current lookup. A newer provider database may differ from the version installed here.

Request a location correction

You can submit a correction to MaxMind. The provider decides whether and when to accept it. Our results change only after we import a newer database; submitting a correction does not immediately update this site or other services.

Network and ASN data

Network organisation and autonomous system number (ASN) information comes from the separate IPtoASN dataset. The IP Geolocation tool reports its build date separately from the location database date.
