Location is an estimate
The result comes from an IP-location database, not GPS. A mobile carrier, VPN or proxy can make the reported area differ from the device location.
Network information is separate
An ASN identifies a routing organization, not necessarily the retail internet provider. Network and location fields can be available independently.

Look up 8.8.8.8 and compare the network organization with the estimated location. Then choose Use my IP for your own connection. Neither lookup identifies a street address or requests GPS.
Network checks originate from the WhatsMyIP server. Only public destinations are accepted. Timeouts may reflect filtering or network conditions rather than a faulty website.
Use the result as one part of your troubleshooting. Network information can change over time.
Why is my IP location wrong?
A VPN or proxy changes the address a website sees. Mobile and shared networks may be mapped to a gateway far from you. An IP address is not a home address, and a missing city is more honest than an invented location.
Location results use MaxMind GeoLite2; the result shows the installed database build date. Network organizations use the separate IPtoASN dataset. Our results change only after a newer provider database is imported, not as soon as a correction is submitted.
If a location appears wrong, confirm the IP you looked up and whether a VPN is active. Compare it with MaxMind's current lookup. You can submit a location correction to MaxMind; acceptance and timing are decided by the provider. Updating an IP database cannot move your device or guarantee that another website will accept its location.
